YOU ARE NOT ALONE UNLESS YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES is a contemporary dance and physical theatre duo that aims an authentic/or not, relationship between two dancers.
The piece is based on one same physical pattern that repeats itself 7 times, with a different state of emotion each. This work through irony, plays with the concept of relationship in between two people.
How can these two individuals adapt more or less immediately when they meet sudden changes in their ways? Are they fighting, falling in love, looking for the audience’s approval or help, walking in the past or just finding their own identity?
The dancers travel through ups and downs to realize that there are many layers of complexity within emotions and states that connect them and connect their humanhood to themselves.
Understanding the limits of the categorization of emotions, the duo starts from a human simple interaction, and goes through a wide spectrum of dynamics that becomes less and less black and white. Authenticity is questioned using social cliché supported and associated with classical music. The work is a manifestation of relationship adaptation.
Through irony the aim is to maintain the original physical human material of the beginning even though the context around is continuously changing.
WHAT (Who the Hell Are Them) collective is an emergent artistic duo created by Francesca De Girolamo (IT) and Lola Serrano (FR). Performers and choreographers, they express their creativity through contemporary dance and physical theatre. They both graduated at Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD), in Austria where they started choreographing and performing together. Through their work the aim is to make connections and use art as a political and social tool towards a various public and offer opportunities of intercultural interaction. Their artistic practice is contemporary dance and physical theatre. They mainly work through partnering work, floorwork, contact improv, detailed approach on choreography, and on the relationship in between the performer and spectator. We want to create meaningful works, for a broad and inclusive audience, through the physical practice of our bodies, but also through theatrical methods such as performativity, irony, characterization, and impulsiveness. Through these tools we create a light atmosphere that it’s the shell of deeper themes that are hidden by an informal context.
Unpredictability plays one of the most important roles, they believe in the constant change of scenes that allows the audience to be fully engaged in the performance and constantly surprised.
In 2021 they performed their first work ADATTARSI at the Lust Am Risiko festival in Salzburg. This piece led them to the first prize of the national French dance competition ‘Danse avec ton Crous 2022’ and the duo got an festival in Toulouse, in 2022. In November 2023, they performed it again in Danspunt in Brugge for Dansvitrine. In 2024 they started their collaboration with Danspunt in Ghent, under the program CODEDANS+, receiving a budget in order to develop the short version of 30 minutes of their new work piece YOU ARE NOT ALONE UNLESS YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES, and perform it in 2025 in Brussels in the form of a site specific performance out of the black box. In April 2025 a work-in-progress showing happened in Paris in occasion of Atep Festival at the theatre of la Sorbonne Nouvelle University.
Individually they both have their artistic career as dancers and performers.
