Our Project: Our Goose Polder Village
A meeting between dance and our cultural heritage.
A solo dance performance in which Irish dance and aerial silk are combined, with the theme being our heritage, the goose riding tradition.
The performance is interactive!
The concept of turning goose riding into an artistic project is an exciting challenge. By showcasing the tradition of our village this way, we can introduce the audience to our cultural practices, spreading knowledge of our traditions and heritage.
Audience Interaction
We recreate the imperial goose riding with 4 king goose riders. The audience is part of the game. The winner then gets to see the show, where Irish dance and aerial silk represent the tradition. Afterward, we can play the game again, as the tradition dictates in every polder village.
Irish dancing refers to the sound of the horse, the rhythm, or bringing the folk dance back into the spotlight, such as during Saint Patrick's Day. If you come to watch and want to join in, speak to the speaker.
Aerial silk is the aerial dance in which the movements of a goose are depicted. The game of goose riding is a combination of ground dance and aerial dance.
What is Goose Riding?
Goose riding is a traditional sport from the polder villages. Originally, a (dead) goose was hung from a gallows in the village square, and riders on horseback would compete to tear off the goose’s head. The winner becomes the king of the polder village, and this is repeated in each village until all the kings are crowned.
Then comes the imperial riding, where the kings compete for the title of Emperor. The winner of this event comes from a specific polder village, and the next year the imperial riding takes place there. Each village has its own colors, so you know exactly who to support.
Goose riding is part of our intangible heritage and an important aspect of our culture.
See you soon!
